What Grade 1 students are working on

Grade 1 is the year formal practice begins. Children move from recognising numbers to using them, from naming letters to blending them into words, and from listening to stories to reading short ones themselves. Progress is uneven by nature: a child may count confidently to a hundred on Monday and lose track at the teens on Wednesday. Short, frequent practice suits this age far better than long sessions.

Grade 1 Math worksheets

Number sense comes first: counting forwards and backwards, comparing quantities, and understanding that the 2 in 25 means two tens. Addition and subtraction stay within twenty, usually with counters, fingers or a number line still allowed. Children meet flat and solid shapes, simple patterns, non-standard measurement, the hour and half hour on a clock, and coins used in small totals.

Grade 1 English worksheets

Phonics dominates: single letter sounds, consonant blends, digraphs such as sh and ch, and the first look at how a silent e changes a vowel. Alongside decoding, children practise letter formation, capital letters and full stops, sight words, and writing a complete sentence that someone else can read.

Grade 1 Science worksheets

Science in Grade 1 is observation. Children compare living and non-living things, name the parts of a plant, sort animals by where they live and what they eat, learn what a body needs to stay healthy, and notice weather and seasons changing around them.

Grade 1 Computer Science worksheets

Computer work starts with the physical machine: naming the monitor, keyboard and mouse, understanding what input and output mean, switching a device on and off properly, and the first rules about asking an adult before using one.

Where Grade 1 children usually get stuck

Reversed letters and digits are normal at this age and usually resolve with practice. The two genuine sticking points are counting on from a number rather than restarting at one, and guessing a word from the picture instead of sounding it out. Both are worth catching early, because both get harder to unlearn in Grade 2.

How to use Grade 1 worksheets at home

Ten to fifteen minutes is plenty. One number sheet and one phonics sheet, finished and praised, beats a stack half done. Let the child read the instruction aloud so you know whether a wrong answer came from the skill or from the words describing it.
