How to use this worksheet

The main goal in Grade 1 addition is moving from counting everything to counting on. Watch your child's fingers: if they count both groups from one every time, that is the habit to change. For 8 + 3, cover the 8 with your hand, say 'eight', then count three fingers up - nine, ten, eleven. Do this for the first few questions before letting them continue alone.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop my child from using their fingers?

No. Finger counting is a normal and useful stage in Grade 1. What is worth changing is counting both groups from one - encourage starting at the larger number and counting on instead.

Why is 7 + 5 so much harder than 7 + 2?

Because it crosses ten, so your child must regroup rather than count a short distance. Practising the pairs that make ten, and splitting the 5 into 3 and 2, makes these sums much less daunting.

How fast should a Grade 1 student be at addition?

Accuracy comes before speed. By the end of Grade 1, sums within 10 are usually quick and within 20 are reliable with some thinking time. Recall of larger facts continues developing through Grade 2.
