Should division be practised before multiplication is fluent?

They support each other, so some overlap is fine. If tables are very shaky, spend a few sessions there first and division will come together much faster.

My child gets lost partway through a long division. What helps?

Saying the four steps aloud - how many, multiply, subtract, bring down - and using squared paper so each digit sits in its own column. Losing the place is nearly always a skipped step, not a maths gap.

How should remainders be written?

At Grade 4 a remainder is usually written as 'r 3'. What matters more is interpreting it in word problems, where the answer may need rounding up rather than reporting a leftover.
