What this worksheet teaches
- Add commas between items in a simple list.
- Identify nouns, verbs and adjectives inside the same sentence.
- Match subject and verb correctly ('she walks', not 'she walk').
- Use question marks and exclamation marks where the sentence needs them, not just full stops.
How to use this worksheet
Irregular past tenses cannot be worked out, only remembered. Keep a running list on the fridge of the ones your child gets wrong and add to it over weeks - that beats re-teaching the same sheet.
Sample questions from this worksheet
- cat / run / sun
- tree / jump / ball
Frequently asked questions
How many adjectives should a Grade 2 sentence have?
One well-chosen adjective is stronger than three stacked ones. If your child writes 'big huge large dog', ask them to pick the best single word.
Does my child need to know what a subject is?
They need to know who or what the sentence is about, which is the same idea in plainer words. The formal term usually appears around Grade 3.
Are exclamation marks being overused?
Very commonly at this grade. A useful test: would you actually shout this sentence? If not, a full stop is the right choice.
