How to use this worksheet

Direct speech punctuation has four separate moving parts - opening marks, the comma, the capital letter and the closing punctuation inside the marks. Have your child check one part at a time across all the sentences instead of perfecting each sentence in turn.

How much grammar practice per week is sensible?

Two or three short sheets beat one long session. Grammar accuracy improves with spacing far more than with volume.

Does the full stop go inside or outside the speech marks?

Inside, when the words belong to the speaker - 'Let's go.' said with the stop before the closing mark. This is the most frequently missed detail at Grade 4.

My child still writes 'there' for everything. What helps?

Only substitution practice. 'They are' for they're, and 'here' inside there for place. Repeated correction without a test to apply does not stick.
