How to use this worksheet

Do the 'how much longer' questions with two real objects and the ruler in front of you the first time. These questions are measurement plus subtraction, and children who can do each separately still trip when the two are combined. Once they have measured and subtracted physically, the paper version follows quickly.

Frequently asked questions

My child measures accurately but forgets to write the unit. Does it matter?

Yes, and it is worth insisting on early. A bare '14' cannot be checked or compared. Asking them to say the number and unit aloud before writing fixes the habit within a few sessions.

Why does my child struggle with rulers where not every line is numbered?

Because they are counting numerals rather than intervals. Have them count the unnumbered marks aloud between two labelled numbers a few times; once they see each gap as one unit, the reading becomes reliable.

Should Grade 2 work in centimetres or inches?

Whichever your school uses primarily, and ideally some exposure to both. The important idea is that the same object gives different numbers in different units - which is exactly why the unit must be written down.
