How to use this worksheet

Split the sheet by tool: rulers first, then anything involving weight or capacity. Switching tools mid-page is where Grade 2 students lose track of which unit they are working in. Ask them to say the unit out loud with each answer - '14 centimetres', not just '14'.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my child struggle with rulers where not every line is numbered?

Because they are counting numerals rather than intervals. Have them count the unnumbered marks aloud between two labelled numbers a few times; once they see each gap as one unit, the reading becomes reliable.

Should Grade 2 work in centimetres or inches?

Whichever your school uses primarily, and ideally some exposure to both. The important idea is that the same object gives different numbers in different units - which is exactly why the unit must be written down.

How close should estimates be?

Roughly right is the aim, not exact. An estimate within about a quarter of the true length shows good sense of size at this age. The value is in noticing the gap between estimate and measurement, not in being nearly perfect.
