Why is my child good at tables but wrong on long multiplication?

Almost always carrying and column alignment. Use squared paper or draw the columns, and circle every carried digit - this fixes the majority of these errors.

Should the worksheet be timed?

Time the fact recall if you like, but leave the multi-digit questions untimed. Speed there causes exactly the slips you are trying to remove.

How does this connect to division?

Closely. Every multiplication fact is a division fact reversed, and checking 7 x 8 = 56 by dividing 56 by 8 makes both topics stronger at the same time.
