How to use this worksheet

Say every word out loud before writing it. Phonics is a listening skill first, and a Grade 1 child who has said 'sun' slowly almost always spells it correctly afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a problem if b and d get reversed?

Very common at Grade 1 and usually resolves with practice. Point out that b has its belly at the back of the stick and move on rather than dwelling on it.

My child knows letter names but cannot blend. What now?

Names and sounds are different skills. Practise sounds only - /s/ not 'ess' - and stretch the word slowly, s-u-n, before speeding it up. Blending usually follows within a few weeks.

Why do some words have to be memorised?

Words like 'said' and 'was' break the usual rules, so they are learnt by sight. The worksheet keeps them separate from the words meant to be sounded out.
