How to use this worksheet

The short vowels e and i are the hardest pair at this stage. Read the vowel-sound rows together, exaggerating each vowel, before your child fills any blanks.

Frequently asked questions

My child knows letter names but cannot blend. What now?

Names and sounds are different skills. Practise sounds only - /s/ not 'ess' - and stretch the word slowly, s-u-n, before speeding it up. Blending usually follows within a few weeks.

Why do some words have to be memorised?

Words like 'said' and 'was' break the usual rules, so they are learnt by sight. The worksheet keeps them separate from the words meant to be sounded out.

Should my child read the whole sheet aloud?

Yes. Reading aloud is how you catch a sound being guessed rather than decoded, and it is the fastest correction available.
