Watch specifically for the silent-e pairs. When a child reads 'hope' as 'hop', the letters were all seen but the final e was treated as decoration. Point at the e, say 'this one makes the o say its name', then let them try the pair again - this single rule accounts for a large share of Grade 2 reading errors.

What are sight words doing on a phonics sheet?

Words such as said, come and one break the usual rules, so they must be learned by memory. Mixing a few into phonics practice stops a child from trying to sound out words that cannot be sounded out.

Is this suitable if my child is behind in reading?
