Frequently asked questions

Should my child still be saying numbers the long way?

Yes, when they are unsure. Saying 'three hundreds, five tens and eight ones' before writing 358 catches most errors before they reach the page, and can be dropped once accuracy is consistent.

How high should Grade 2 place value go?

Up to 1,000 is the usual Grade 2 range. Thousands can wait until three-digit work - including numbers with zeros in the middle - is comfortable.

My child says the 0 in 407 means nothing. How should I explain it?

It means no tens, and it holds the 4 in the hundreds place. Write 47 and 407 in labelled columns side by side - seeing the 4 shift columns when the zero is removed makes the zero's job obvious.
