How to use this worksheet

Finish with a regrouping demonstration: count out ten single objects, bundle them, then ten bundles into a hundred. Children who have physically made a hundred from tens handle the expanded-form and regrouping questions much more confidently than those who have only read about it.

Why does my child think 89 is bigger than 102?

Because 8 and 9 are bigger digits than 1, 0 and 2. Comparing digit sizes instead of place values is the standard Grade 2 slip. Put both numbers in hundreds-tens-ones columns and compare the leftmost column first.

Do we need base-ten blocks?

They help but are not required. Ten bundles of ten straws, beans or pasta pieces do the same job, and making the hundred by hand is arguably more memorable than using ready-made blocks.

How does this connect to two-digit addition?

Directly. Carrying is regrouping ten ones into a ten, and borrowing is the reverse. Solid place value in Grade 2 is what stops column addition from becoming a memorised set of steps.
