Frequently asked questions

Is a cactus spine a leaf or a thorn?

Cactus spines are modified leaves - the reduced surface cuts water loss, and the thick green stem takes over photosynthesis. This is a favourite Grade 4 adaptation question.

Does my child need to memorise habitat lists?

Not lists. What is assessed is matching a feature to a reason - thick fur for cold, webbed feet for water - so understanding a few clear examples beats memorising many.

How is this different from the Grade 3 sheet on the same topic?

Grade 3 names parts and habitats; Grade 4 explains adaptation, food chains, seed dispersal and self-defence, and expects a reason with each answer.
