Frequently asked questions

Do the answers need full sentences?

Short answers are acceptable at Grade 2, but writing one full sentence for at least the main-idea question is good preparation for later grades.

How long should this take?

Usually 15 to 20 minutes. If it stretches much beyond that, split it - passage and reading today, questions tomorrow.

My child reads well but answers questions wrongly. Why?

Decoding and comprehending are separate skills. Slowing the reading down and having them retell the passage in their own words before answering usually closes the gap.
