Read the questions before the passage the first time through. It feels backwards but it teaches purposeful reading, which is what timed comprehension tests actually measure.

Decoding and understanding are separate skills. Fluent reading can use so much attention on accuracy that meaning is not stored - slowing down and retelling each paragraph fixes it.

How many times should the passage be read?

Twice is normal at Grade 3: once for the story, once for the answers. Rereading is a strategy, not a sign of weakness.

Should my child write in full sentences?

For most comprehension marking, yes - and it also forces them to reread the question, which prevents half-answers.
