How to use this worksheet

The classic Grade 1 mistake is refusing to call a rotated square a square, or calling a long rectangle 'not a rectangle'. Cut one shape out of paper and physically turn it - seeing the same shape in a new position is what fixes this, and pictures alone rarely do.

My child mixes up sides and corners. What helps?

Trace the sides with a finger and tap the corners. Different physical actions for the two words keeps them apart better than repeating the definitions.

Why won't my child accept a tilted square as a square?

Because they learned the shape in one fixed position. Turning a paper cut-out while they watch resolves it quickly - it is a very common Grade 1 stage.

Should my child know 3D shape names now?

Recognising a ball, box and can shape is plenty at Grade 1. Formal names like sphere and cuboid usually arrive in Grade 2.
