How to use this worksheet

Ask 'more or fewer?' before any calculating. If your child can say the answer should be smaller than the number they started with, they have understood the problem, and the subtraction that follows is the easy part. If they cannot, re-read the story rather than practising the sum.

Do answers need a number sentence, or is the answer enough?

Write the number sentence. It shows the thinking, makes mistakes easy to spot, and is the format expected as problems get longer in later grades.

My child always adds. How do I break that habit?

Ask whether the answer should be bigger or smaller than the starting number before any writing. Once that question becomes a habit, the automatic adding stops.

My child can add but not solve word problems. Why?

Because word problems test reading and choosing an operation as well as calculating. The arithmetic is fine; the missing step is deciding what the story is asking, which needs its own practice.
