How to use this worksheet

Read the problem aloud twice: once for the story, once for the numbers. Grade 1 students who read only once tend to grab the two numbers and add them regardless of what the question asked. The second read is where 'how many are left' gets noticed.

Do answers need a number sentence, or is the answer enough?

Write the number sentence. It shows the thinking, makes mistakes easy to spot, and is the format expected as problems get longer in later grades.

My child always adds. How do I break that habit?

Ask whether the answer should be bigger or smaller than the starting number before any writing. Once that question becomes a habit, the automatic adding stops.

My child can add but not solve word problems. Why?

Because word problems test reading and choosing an operation as well as calculating. The arithmetic is fine; the missing step is deciding what the story is asking, which needs its own practice.
